Now Ceferin, speaking at a UEFA press conference in Nyon, has conceded the governing body must address rising frustration from all quarters.

"I understand the angst, I really do, but we have to be thorough," Ceferin said. "The investigation is ongoing and we are working hard to conclude it as soon as possible. But we have to do this properly and we have to be fair to all parties involved.

"The integrity of our competitions is paramount and we will not compromise on that. We have to make sure that everyone is playing by the same rules and that there is a level playing field for all."
