Variations and Origins

Acadian French is a distinct variation of French spoken primarily in the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. It is descended from the French settlers of Acadia, a former French colony located in present-day Eastern Canada. Acadian French is characterized by its unique pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, which differ from Standard French.

Spread of Acadian French

The Acadians were expelled from their homeland in 1755 during the Seven Years' War. They were scattered throughout what is now Canada and the United States, taking their language with them. Today, Acadian French is spoken by approximately 300,000 people in Canada, making it one of the largest French-speaking communities outside of Quebec.
