Mpox Outbreak: WHO Declares Global Emergency

What is Mpox?

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a rare but potentially fatal viral infection that can be transmitted from animals to humans and from person to person.

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Skin rash (usually starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body)

Outbreak in Africa

In December 2022, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared a national outbreak of mpox. An outbreak is also occurring in the neighboring Republic of Congo.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency of international concern.

Global Concern

The WHO is concerned about the spread of mpox beyond Africa. Cases have been reported in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

The WHO is urging countries to take steps to prevent and control the spread of mpox, including:

  • Educating the public about mpox
  • Surveillance for cases
  • Contact tracing
  • Vaccination

What You Can Do

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from mpox:

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick or who have a rash.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Do not share personal items, such as utensils, cups, or clothing.
  • Get vaccinated if you are eligible.
